My personal blog as a 'grown-up' Goth and Romantic living in the Highlands of Scotland. I write about the places I go, the things I see and my thoughts on life as a Goth and the subculture, and things in the broader realm of the Gothic and darkly Romantic. Sometimes I write about music I like and sometimes I review things. This blog often includes architectural photography, graveyards and other images from the darker side of life.

Goth is not just about imitating each other, it is a creative movement and subculture that grew out of post-punk and is based on seeing beauty in the dark places of the world, the expression of that in Goth rock. It looks back to the various ways throughout history in which people have confronted and explored the macabre, the dark and the taboo, and as such I'm going to post about more than the just the standards of the subculture (Siouxsie, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, et al) and look at things by people who might not consider themselves anything to do with the subculture, but have eyes for the dark places. The Gothic should not be limited by what is already within it; inspiration comes from all places, the key is to look with open eyes, listen carefully and think with an open mind..

Dinner With Friends

I am going to be upfront and honest here; I just really like how my make-up turned out today, and wanted to share it.

Looking imperious!
I was all done up nice to go out for dinner with Raven and Suzy_Bugs. It wasn't to anywhere fancy, but I just felt like dressing up as I don't actually have very many opportunities to do so. I wore a corset, layered floor-lenght skirts, a silver satin-effect ruffled blouse, and plenty of fancy accessories. I quite enjoyed wearing more traditionally Gothic make-up; what I usually wear is a lot more toned-down than this. I did the two-tone eye-shadow based on a tutorial by "This Is Black Friday" on YouTube. The tutorial can be found ::here::.

Ruffles and suchlike
In retrospect I feel like I should not have worn black lipstick, as it wears off unevenly when eating. I definitely should not have worn, or even bought, the black lip-gloss; it gives a lovely wet-look effect when freshly applied, almost like PVC, but it rapidly starts bleeding into the fine lines of my skin around my lips, even with lip-liner, and even over black lipstick. In the end, I had to start over, and just wore matt black lipstick out.

Extra shiny lipstick! That did not last :(
Other than that, I had a lovely dinner, a nice evening with friends, especially with Raven (who'd just finished a 12hr shift at work and deserved a nice evening) and altogether things went well.

  1. The True Gothic look. This is the sort of look I like to see today. It still has a 1980s appeal to the image. Not like the modern fake wana-be goths with a small g.

    1. I don't think all modern Goths are wannabes - it's just that too many of them are disconnected from the core of the scene; they think Goth is Marilyn Manson and Black Veil Brides because nobody's introduced them to the original Goth bands, and the modern bands that still perform music that is in that genre and style - all they see are the big corporate-backed names that sell a lot of merchandise and have a lot of media presence. They think the Goth look is scene clothes because nobody's shown them photos from WGT or Whitby Gothic Weekend, etc. etc. Hopefully with the internet giving members of the Goth subculture a public platform, this will start reversing itself - although it also gives people who don't know much about Goth a platform to say factually inaccurate stuff, too.

  2. Lovely makeup.

When wearing dark lip gloss, a trick I picked up is to put a stick concealer around the outside of your lips and blend it outwards. For me, it prevents the color from bleeding outside the lines.

    1. I think in future I will stick to a more natural colour, and remember to take the lipstick with me to touch it up after eating.

    1. Thank-you very much :) It looked nice, but it very rapidly started spreading and smudging because it just doesn't set :(
